Slater's Steamer was the final Action story, and was possibly the work of Jack Adrian. Brothers Gary and Tim Slater were pot-holing in Derbyshire when an 'earthquake' caused them both to fall. Sustaining significant injuries, the pair spent days trapped underground before finally being able to climb to freedom. The world that awaited them was changed forever. Planes from the east had bombed Britain and the rest of Europe back to the dark ages. All the Slaters wanted was to return to London and see if they could find their father. A chance encounter with a crazy old man allowed them to find a hidden collection of Victorian steam engines, and trouble in the form of Reg Dorker's gang of robbers.  Having been shocked out of his deranged state, the old man revealed himself to be Lord Drago, the owner of the collection. Drago helped the Slaters defeat Dorker and travelled with them to London, on a journey besieged by marauding gangs and mutated survivors, shovelling coal into the boiler along the way.

Unfortunately, it all came to an end very quickly, because time was up for Action, so Slater's Steamer had to wrap-up early. The boys arrived in a devastated London, running into their dad within moments. Despite the hopelessness of the situation, the survivors of the apocalypse saw a better future if they all pulled together against insurmountable odds and buckled down to some good, honest hard work, and obviously having a traction engine on hand would help enormously. Both script and art are of a reasonable quality for a story which was never allowed to fulfil its potential.
